Antony and Cleopatra |
Currently Martin is in rehearsals for the New York
City Opera production of Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra, which will be
performed at Carnegie Hall in January.
About the Opera
New York City Opera celebrates the centennial of the birth of
the great American composer Samuel Barber with concert performances of his
masterwork Antony and Cleopatra at Carnegie Hall on January 15th and 16th,
2009. Barber ranked this work among his finest and it remains highly regarded
for its melodic richness, striking characterizations, and brilliant
orchestration.
The radiant soprano Lauren Flanigan sings the role of
Cleopatra, adding to her unique City Opera gallery of colorful American opera
heroines including Susan B. Anthony in The Mother of Us All, Abigail Borden in
Lizzie Borden, Christine in Mourning Becomes Electra, and the title role of
Barber's Vanessa, in which she triumphed last season. Teddy Tahu Rhodes, a
striking baritone from New Zealand, makes his City Opera debut as Antony and
the rising dramatic tenor Simon O'Neill returns to the company to sing Caesar.
The cast also includes City Opera favorites David Pittsinger as Enobarbus,
Sandra Piques Eddy as Charmian, and Laura Vlasak Nolen as Iras. City Opera
Music Director George Manahan leads the New York City Opera orchestra and
chorus in what is sure to be one of the musical highlights of the season.

Number 13 - A
film
In January, Martin will play the role of Bryant in
his first feature film Number 13. The film stars Mickey Rourke, 50 Cent, and
action star Jason Stratham, and is directed bythe talented young director Gela
Boubliani. The film is to be released in '09.
About the Film
Intensely engaging
and uniquely insightful 13 (Tzameti) is a thrillingly surreal journey that
begins with the descent of a young man, Sebastien (Georges Babluani), into a
sinister criminal underworld in which men gamble on each others lives in a
shockingly brutal new sport...
The story is told through the eyes of
26-year-old Georgian-born first time director Gela Babluani, son of well-known
Georgian helmer Temur Babluani, who shows strong talent at creating an
atmosphere of threatening mystery and powerful psychological violence. The
director's choice for Tariel Meliava's black and white cinematography also
enhances the strong brutality of each character building tension throughout the
film.
Blowing away the competition at this year's Venice Film Festival,
one film has left a prominent mark on visitors and judges alike and looks set
to do the same when it hits cinemas across the UK, courtesy of Revolver
Entertainment. Gela Babluani's captivating debut, 13 (Tzameti), scooped the
'The Lion of the Future Award' For Best First Film and has just been officially
selected for competition at the Sundance Film Festival 2006.
Who's in the Film
50 Cent, Mickey Rourke
and Jason Statham have signed on to star opposite Sam Riley in "13," a remake
of the French film "13 Tzameti," according to Variety. The film is being
written and directed by Géla Babluani, who wrote and directed the
original.
The plot centers on a naive young man who decides to steal a
package and follow its accompanying instructions, hoping for a big payoff. But
when he arrives at his destination, he finds a secret and ugly world of Russian
roulette, where men are gambling behind closed doors on the lives of other men.
And he's been trailed there by an edgy, angry cop.
The film will start
shooting in mid-November in and around New York City. There's no word yet on
which actors are playing which roles.
