Please pass on the following information to anyone interested in studying voice. Vocal Instruction with Martín Solá The Martín Solá Philosophy Anyone can learn to sing. In my twenty-two years of experience in singing, I have seen great talent squandered, and moderately talented singers flourish into beautifully expressive artists through determination, hard work, and careful practice. In singing, one's body is one's instrument. The first step towards developing a reliable singing voice and attaining longevity and health in a singing career is understanding the technique and mechanics of how the body and breath support the voice. Learning the correct function of certain body parts (i.e. the tongue, jaw, palate, lips, larynx, ribcage, and diaphragm) and practicing the coordination of those parts working together is, crucial to cultivating a healthy singing voice. |
Once these principles are clearly understood they must be applied through the practice of vocalizes (exercises) in the form of scales and arpeggios. This type of vocal regimen is comparable to the barre routine that a ballet dancer performs at the beginning of a dance class. Careful practice of these principles and exercises serve to form correct habits and create "muscle memory" that will release the voice and maintain vocal health throughout one's career.
As mastery of these elements is achieved the voice will begin to reveal its true nature and will grow in range, volume, and breadth of sound. As healthy habits become second nature, the singer can begin to focus more attention on artistry and self-expression, which will lead to the true joy of singing.

Last fall, I performed as the tenor soloist with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall for a concert entitled "The Bernstein Songbook", where I was paired with soprano Christiane Noll and performed with vocalist Lillias White.
